The 4 Major Forex Sessions

The Holy Grail: London-New York Overlap (13:00–17:00 GMT)

This 4-hour window is when BOTH London and New York are open. It accounts for roughly 70% of all daily forex volume. This is when you should be actively trading:

• Tightest spreads on EURUSD, GBPUSD, XAUUSD
• Biggest intraday ranges — most trend days are made here
• Major US economic data (NFP, CPI, GDP) drops at 13:30 GMT
• Institutional order flow is at its peak — breakouts are more likely to be real

Session Characteristics by Pair

EURUSD, GBPUSD: Sleep through Asia. Wake up at London open. Most of the daily range (80%+) occurs during London and NY sessions. Trading EURUSD during Tokyo is paying spread for nothing.

USDJPY, JPY crosses: Active during Tokyo and early London. JPY pairs often reverse at the Tokyo fix (02:00 GMT). The London open can trigger large JPY moves as carry trades adjust.

AUDUSD, NZDUSD: Most active during Sydney and Tokyo. Australian/New Zealand economic data drops during these sessions. During London/NY, these pairs often just drift.

XAUUSD (Gold): Active during ALL sessions but the biggest moves happen during London open (08:00 GMT), NY open (13:00 GMT), and US data releases (13:30 GMT). Gold respects the London fix (10:00 and 15:00 GMT).

When NOT to Trade

• Sunday open (22:00 GMT): Thin liquidity, erratic gaps. Wait 30-60 minutes for the market to settle.
• Friday after 17:00 GMT: Liquidity dries up as London closes. Spreads widen. Positions get rolled over.
• Bank holidays: When London or NY is on holiday, volume drops 50%+. Check the economic calendar.
• 15 minutes before/after major news: Spreads widen dramatically. Slippage is brutal. Wait for the spike to settle.

Session-Based Trading Strategy

1. Asian session (00:00–08:00 GMT): Mark the Asian range high/low. No new positions — just observation.
2. London open (08:00 GMT): Wait for the Asian range breakout. Enter on retest. Place stop beyond the opposite side of the Asian range.
3. NY open (13:00 GMT): If London trend is intact, add to position. If reversing, close and wait.
4. London close (17:00 GMT): Close all intraday positions. The best trading day is done.
